Soaring Over Acadia

Whale watching and seeing a moose- those were my top two Maine bucket-list items. Unfortunately neither ended up happening. I had no clue that a whale watching tour is at least five hours long. Addison has developed a new sensitivity to motion and I figured five hours on a boat in the middle of the ocean would be a miserable time for all. What's the next best thing? Hopping in a plane and taking a one hour flight to see Acadia National Park from the sky, of course!

Our first stay in Maine was at Narrows Too in Trenton, Maine. It's located just steps away from a small airport that shares space with Scenic Flights of Acadia. Their runway is aimed right towards Narrows Too, so every 15-20 minutes we'd have a plane flying over our RV. Our girls had never flown before and they had been begging to go on a plane for years. Once I realized that I wouldn't be spending our Maine budget on whales, I suggested to Rick that we take the girls on a flight instead. Seeing Acadia from above was sure to be breathtaking and was a sure way to cure the flight fever the girls had caught at some point. I was still slightly worried about Addison's motion sickness, but the flight was only an hour and we had a stockpile of dramamine.

The morning of our flight, our excitement was high. The girls could barely contain themselves! I've flown several times, but never in a plane so small. I used to love roller coasters and now they make me sick, so I was a tad worried about the turbulence. I figured, if need be, I would just steal some of Addison's dramamine. We met our pilot under a pavilion, begged him not to crash, and then we headed towards the plane.

It was a beautiful, clear day. Much better than the past few days of fog and cloudiness. Our pilot walked us up to the plane and offered the co pilot seat to one of the girls. With not knowing how Addison's belly would handle the ride, we decided it was best if she sat next to mom or dad. That left co pilot open to Emma and she was thrilled! We piled in, listened to the pilot's safety spiel, and made our way down the runway.

At this point I was texting friends back at the campground hoping one of them would be able to get a video of us flying over. Victoria succeeded!

The moment we got into the air, Acadia National Park opened up. To say it was breathtaking would be an understatement. We got to see multiple lighthouses, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Bar Harbor, Cranberry Island, and so many other sites. I have to say, we spent two weeks exploring by foot, but there was something extremely magical about exploring by air.

Addison did end up feeling sick 20 minutes into the flight, but thankfully the ginger chews provided on the plane helped more than the dramamine did. This ended up being such a huge core memory for us. If you're ever near Trenton, Maine, we highly recommend booking a flight through Scenic Flights of Acadia and seeing the area from the sky.
